Among the various interfacial spectroscopic methods, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been utilized as a convenient technique to investigate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on metal surfaces. The analysis of spectral features has provided detailed information on the adsorption mechanism and chemical reactions on surfaces. SAMs have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in many areas including adhesion, corrosion, biocompatibility, and molecular electronics. Aromatic-containing monolayers have a number of advantages due to their rigidity and the nature of -conjugation and can potentially be utilized in molecular electronic devices. Predicting the geometric and electronic structures of SAMs on the molecule-metal interface should be essential for rationally designing molecular electronic devices. In this presentation, I would like to introduce our recent effort on understanding the adsorption behaviors of aromatic SAMs on Cu, Ag, and Au surfaces investigated by SERS.
