A Novel One-Step Fabrication of Ag-Deposited Magnetic Particles for Efficient SERS Substrates

We have recently discovered that very stable and optically tunable Ag films can be reproducibly fabricated simply by soaking glass substrates in ethanolic solutions of AgNO3 and butylamine. These films have been shown to possess very homogeneous morphology and SERS activity. We demonstrate in this work that the same protocol can be adopted in the fabrication of Ag-deposited magnetic particles. The Ag-deposited magnetic particles are also found to be efficient SERS substrates for the vibrational spectroscopic characterization of molecular adsorbates prepared in a similar way on silver surfaces. Since the magnetic particles are readily recovered from the solution phase without centrifugation and/or filtering, the SERS-active magnetic particles prepared in this work will be useful especially in the Raman spectroscopic analysis of organic species in aqueous solutions.
