Nanocatalysis is a rapid growing field which involves the use of nanoparticles as catalysts for a variety of organic and inorganic reactions. In this work, we have investigated the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol by NaBH4 using silver-deposited magnetic nanoparticles as catalysts. Very stable and optically tunable Ag nanoaggregate films can be reproducibly fabricated simply by soaking magnetic particles in ethanolic solutions of AgNO3 and butylamine. With this simple and surfactant-free fabrication of Ag-deposited magnetic nanoparticles, we can avoid contamination in the final product, which makes them suitable for further catalytic applications. Since the magnetic particles are readily recovered from the solution phase without centrifugation and/or filtering, the Ag-deposited magnetic nanoparticles prepared in this work will be useful especially in variety of catalytic reactions.
