ZnO is a direct-bandgap semiconductor with a large bandgap of 3.37 eV and a large exciton binding energy of 60 meV. This strong exciton binding energy, which is much larger than the thermal energy at room temperature, can ensure an efficient UV-blue emission at room temperature. Consequently, ZnO has great potential in applications such as room-temperature UV lasers, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and sensors. We synthesize of ZnO nanocrystals with hexagon, hexagonal cone, and rod shapes via non-hydrolytic ester elimination sol-gel reactions. The synthesized nanocrystals were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and we observed room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) properties of the ZnO nanocrystals. In the case of ZnO nanorods, an average size of 5 nm x 30 nm, a blue-shift of PL spectra is observed because of quantum confinement effects.
