Photodissociation dynamics of molecules is governed by the nature of excited states prepared by electronic transitions and by the shape of potential energy surfaces along the reaction coordinates leading to individual products. The mechanism and the dynamics of dissociation can be investigated by precise measurements of physical properties of the products such as quantum state distributions, energy distribution among degrees of freedom, angular and angular momentum distributions and so forth. The dissociation can be classified as three in general as (1) direct dissociation from a repulsive state, (2) dissociation on the ground electronic state after rapid internal conversion, and (3) indirect dissociation on the excited state with excessive potential couplings. In each case, characteristics of the dissociation are discussed with examples studied in our laboratory.
