We describe our recent theoretical and computational approaches to understanding of dynamical heterogeneities observed in supercooled liquids and room temperature ionic liquids. By applying the concept of dynamical facilitation and analyzing resulting excitation lines, we investigate dynamic heterogeneities and its consequences. First, we explore the origin of decoupling of transport coefficients in supercooled liquids. We illustrate our approach with two classes of models; strong and fragile glass formers. Second, we study statistics of dynamical exchange events in coarse-grained models of supercooled liquids. Distributions for exchange and persistence times are calculated over a range of temperatures. Finally, we discuss our recent results illustrating that similar behaviors related to dynamical heterogeneities are also observed in coarse-grained models of room-temperature ionic liquid systems.
