A membrane introduction/time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MI-TOFMS) has been employed for the characterization of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane. The effects of the thickness of the membrane, the temperature of the membrane inlet and the flow rate of the sample on the responses and response times were studied for different classes of chemical compounds both non-polar and polar species, i.e., aromatics, alcohols, and ketones. Stronger analyte-membrane interaction leads to a slower diffusion coefficient and larger partition coefficient. A mathematical model is formulated to obtain analyte concentration profiles in the flow chamber and inside the membrane. The MI-TOFMS system shows detection limits in the order of tens of ppbv and its response is linear for more than four orders of magnitude. The current results should help in the design of new membrane probes and in the selection of new membranes.
