An electrochemical nitric oxide (NO) sensor based on nanopore electrode was prepared and applied to scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) as probe. The NO sensor was fabricated by sealing a conically etched Pt wire (dimensions of etched tip <10 nm) into a glass capillary. A nanodisk electrode was exposed by polishing and the disk was etched to form a conical pore (radius < ~1.0 µm; depth < ~30 µm). The nanopore electrode was electrochemically platinized. Silanization was conducted for the nanopore to give it hydrophobicity. Then, a polymeric film (poly-5-amino-1-naphthol) was applied on the platinized Pt inside the pore for NO selectivity. Finally, the prepared electrode was used as a NO-selective scanning probe for SECM imaging of the NO flux from NO generating microstructures. The probe exhibits a sensitivity of 6.5 ± 0.02 pA/nM and detection limit of 32 nM.
