A novel tricarbocyanine-based fluorogenic chemosensor bearing quinoline (1) was developed as a fluorescent NIR chemosensor high selectivity towards Zn2+/Hg2+, but no significant response towards other competitive cations. The fluorescent probe 1 coordinates with Zn2+ and Hg2+ ions with 2:1 and 1:1 complex stoichiometries, respectively, as resulted in Job’s plot analysis. Addition of Zn2+ to an aqueous solution of 1 gives a significant enhanced fluorescence emission by CHEF effect. On the other hand addition of Hg2+ to an aqueous solution of 1 gives a fluorescence quenching by heavy metal ion effect. We also have described cell line applications of 1∙Zn2+ and 1∙Hg2+, a new fluorescent NIR chemosensor for imaging toxic Zn2+/Hg2+ in living biological samples.
