Rotational Isomers of Methylcatechols Studied by Hole-burning REMPI Spectroscopy

We report the spectroscopic studies of supersonically cooled 3-methylcatechol and 4-methylcatechol using REMPI spectroscopy. From the mass-resolved S1← S0 excitation spectra in a supersonic jet, for each catechol, two rotamers have been identified in the spectral range of 500 cm-1 above the band origin using the hole burning technique. The low-frequency bands of 3MC have been assigned to the internal rotation of methyl group and the potential curves for methyl rotation have been constructed using one-dimensional rotor model. The vibrational bands of 4MC have been assigned to the overtone and combination bands of the two low-frequency normal modes while the splitting of each band has been attributed to the internal rotation of methyl group. The potential energy curve of methyl rotation was calculated using ab initio and compared with the fitted potential energy curve.
