PbFCl-type blue-emitting oxychloride phosphors LnOCl:Tm (Ln=La and Gd) of different morphologies were prepared by thermal dehydration of Ln(OH)2Cl:Tm. While the liquid phase process in HCl solution leads to the direct formation of LnOCl:Tm with spherical morphology, the solvothermal pressure facilitates the anisotropic growth of Ln(OH)2Cl:Tm at lower temperature. An additional dehydration of La(OH)2Cl:Tm rods results in LaOCl:Tm with highly porous particle surface, inducing quite low photoemission intensity. The elimination of surface porosity by using a surfactant yields a rhomboidal-shape phosphor particles and significantly increased the emission intensity of LaOCl:Tm. In contrast, GdOCl:Tm obtained from Gd(OH)2Cl:Tm shows no porous surface and exhibits blue-emission about 8 times stronger than that of the same composition that was directly prepared under the ambient pressure.
