An interesting aspect of the nanometer sized electrode is its usage as a miniaturized probe for the measurement of electrochemical potential of solutions. In these potentiometric techniques like a scanning electrochemical potential microscopy (SECPM), however, fabrication of nanometer sized probes and obtaining stable and reproducible probe potentials remain significant problems. An important factor in these measurements is impedance ratio between the probe and potentiometer. In this work, we report the measurement of electrochemical potential of a solution by chemically modified gold probes and a potentiometer with high input impedance. Chemically modified probes can be fabricated by forming a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a polystyrene coated gold electrode. We examined the response of a probe to the electrochemical potential of the solution that was changed by varying the concentration ratio of a redox couple in solution. The main features of the probe response and the advantages of chemically modified probe are discussed.
