Recently, discotic liquid crystals have attracted much attention due to their diverse usability toward organic field effect transistor (OFET), organic light emitting diode (OLED) and photovoltaic devices. All of them are using charge degrees of freedom alone. In this study, however, we try to introduce some organic free radicals for the purpose of inducing a coupled phenomenon between charge and spin degrees of freedom. As a result, one can expect that a certain type of magnetic property may be induced by the free radical intercalation into inter-stacks of discotic liquid crystals. Here, it is thought that an orbital motion of mobile charges along the columnar structures is expected to interact with the spins of organic radicals and finally produce an unexpected new magnetic property. In order to detect these magnetic properties effectively, electron magnetic resonance (EMR) and SQUID measurements were performed for the discotic liquid crystals containing various ratios of organic free radicals.
