Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted considerable interest in recent year, due to their unique physical and chemical properties depending on the size and shape (i.e., quantum confinement effects), and various potential applications as building blocks for “bottom up” approaches toward future nanodevices. As one of the important IV-VI semiconductor materials, rock-salt (cubic) structured lead telluride (PbTe) has been the object of particular attention, because of strong quantum confinement effect owing to large Bohr radius (ca. rB = 46 nm). In the present work, high-quality colloidal PbTe NCs were synthesized with various morphologies, by changing the growth temperature and capping ligands. Two typed capping ligands, alkyl amines and phosphonic acids having various alkyl chains from butyl (C4) to octadecyl (C18). The nanodots can be progressively transformed into the nanosize cubes, flowers, stars, hexapods, and tetrapods by decreasing the growth temperature.
