Morphology-Controlled Lead Selenide Nanocrystals and their In-situ Growth on Carbon Nanotubes

High-quality colloidal lead selenide (PbSe) nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized with various morphologies in a controlled manner, by changing the growth temperature and capping ligands. As oleic acid was used as ligands and activating agents for Pb precursor, the evolution from nanodots to nanocubes was achieved. The nanocubes can be progressively transformed into the nanosize flowers, stars, hexapods, and tetrapods by decreasing the growth temperature (simultaneously increasing the growth time), using phosphonic acids instead. These systematic morphology-control strategies were applied to in situ growth of PbSe NCs on carbon nanotubes, showing successfully production of the dot, cube, tetragon, zigzagged rod, and hexapod shaped NCs.
