Glutamate is one of the important neurotransmitters and related to neuronal disorders. Glucose is the energy source for metabolism and related to diabetes. Both compounds are oxidized by the enzymes, glutamate oxidase (GLOx) and glucose oxidase (GOx), producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Nanoporous platinum boosts the kinetics of H2O2 oxidation process on the electrode through the large surface area so as to enhance the sensitivity and suppress possible interferences by electroactive species. In order to prove that, the enzyme sensors were prepared with platinum or platinum/iridium alloy microelectrodes, at which surface nanoporous platinum is deposited electrochemically. The deposition of nanoporous platinum was carried out in the liquid crystal (LC) consisting of hexachloro platinic acid and a surfactant with an appropriate composition. The enzymes were entrapped during electro-polymerization of 1,3-phenylenediamine on the nanoporous platinum-deposited microelectrodes. It is expected that the biosensors based on the enzyme electrodes as made will provide the good tools for the living cell study and diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
