The Effects of Oxidized Starch Surface Sizing on Paper Properties

Sizing can be improved the printing and writing qualities of paper as the controlled absorbency or wettability of paper. Therefore, surface sizing combined with internal sizing of super lightweight newsprint was done by the paper machine with pond type of size press. As sizing agents, rosin for internal sizing and oxidized starch for surface sizing were used. The concentration of oxidized starch solution was changed from 0 to 5.0%, and rosin was added in to the stock at level of 0.3% to filler. As the concentration of oxidized starch solution was increased, tensile and burst strength, folding endurance, and oil absorbency of surfac sized paper were increased. On the other hand, tear strength, breaking length, opacity, smoothness, and water absorbency had a tendency to decrease. The dry and wet picking, trapping, ink set, and wet ink receptivity of surface sized paper was increased as the concentration of oxidized starch was increased. The properties comparision between the surface sized paper and unsized paper are also discussed.
