The chemical and electronic properties of a material can be altered by functionalizing its surface. At the nanometer size scale in particular, surface and interfacial properties dominate the behavior of devices, and control of these interfaces is critical. This talk will focus on molecular approaches to modifying semiconductor surfaces. A goal is to obtain a sufficiently high degree of surface control and range of attachment configurations to ultimately enable the precise engineering of interfacial properties. Examples of molecular attachment chemistry at reconstructed germanium surfaces will be presented. In addition, layer-by-layer organic functionalization will be introduced, and results in which this multilayer attachment chemistry is extended into a molecular layer deposition process for new materials applications will be presented.
