Dendrimer phthalocyanine has been utilized as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy. Large dendritic wedges can successfully prevent collisional quenching of the excited state of phthalocyanine moiety. Therefore, the dendrimer phthalocyanine exhibited extremely strong photodynamic efficacy. Recently, we have developed ternary complex using phthalocyanine dendrimers, cis-platin, and PEG-PAsp block copolymer for a combination of photodynamic and chemo therapy. Carboxylate groups of PEG-PAsp and phthalocyanine dendrimer seem to be bound to cis-platin, an anticancer agent, by metal-ligation interaction. Dynamic light scattering measurement of the ternary complex exhibited uniform size of polymeric micelle formation with a diameter of 100 nm. Considering the large hydrodynamic volume of micellar formulation, this ternary complex might be suitable for passive targeting by means of enhanced permeation and retention effect.
