With the aid of supramolecular chemistry, recognizing and sensing anionic or cationic analytes has recently emerged as a key research field. Fluorescence is an important detection method due to its simplicity and high detection limit. Indeed, during recent ten years, there have been a considerable amount of reports regarding ion selective receptors using the fluorescent changes as the means of detection. For example, our group reported a new water-soluble and fluorescent imidazolium receptor, which effectively and selectively recognizes the biologically important GTP over other structurally similar anions in aqueous solution of physiological pH 7.4. We also recently reported a highly selective fluorescent chemosensor for PPi that can function in a 100% aqueous solution. This sensor shows an excimer peak at 490 nm only in the presence of PPi. Manipulation of lactone or lactam ring–opening processes of rhodamine B derivatives or fluorescein derivatives and application of these unique processes to the fluorescent chemosensors for ions will be also presented.
