Mass spectrometry has traditionally employed gas phase separations of molecules by their mass-to-charge (m/z) ratio to resolve molecular ions for mass analysis. Within the new generation of Synapt HDMS mass spectrometers, Waters has integrated the capability to use molecular shape as an additional dimension for resolving ions in the gas phase prior to TOF MS analysis. This talk will cover the integration of a novel collision cell technology that permits ion mobility separations of molecules, and the option for multiple stages of collision induced dissociation (fragmentation) of those molecules. The application of this technology to structural studies of peptides, proteins, and complexes will be discussed. This talk will also show that the incorporation of these new capabilities was accomplished without sacrificing core Q-Tof functionality, including the ability to apply LC/MSE methodology for comprehensive qualitative and quantitative proteomic analyses.
