The QTrap Hybrid Mass Spectrometer System consists of a linear ion trap (LIT) in a triple quadrupole ion path, a combination that provides complete triple quadrupole functionality with all scan modes, as well as ion trap scan modes. The LIT employs mass selective ejection of ions from the end of the quadrupole, toward the detector, in a configuration that fits naturally with a triple quadrupole. The ejection process involves selective radial excitation of the ions with rapid ejection over a small axial energy barrier. The mechanisms of the excitation and ejection processes will be described. Specific operation modes such as high resolution for charge state determination, MS^novel IDA scan modes will be illustrated with examples. Some opportunities for future development of this technology will also be discussed.
