Solution Processable New Donor Materials based on Thiophene and Triphenylamine for Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells

Since the first introduction of organic solar cells (OSCs) by Tang, the development of organic solar cells has attracted considerable attention due to their advantages of easy synthesis, low cost and easy device fabrication. Generally, organic small molecules based on oligothiophene and acene were commonly used as organic semiconductors due to good charge transport ability. However, these materials are oriented perpendicularly on the substrate, which has specific problem for organic solar cells devices fabrication due to it reduces the absorption of incident light as well as charge transport to the electrode. Also, these organic small molecules are difficult to form a uniform film by solution process because it can be easily crystallize in organic solvent. To overcome these problem, we report new 3-dimensional and solution processable donor materials, which consist of thiophene and triphenylamine unit linked with conjugated bond. The bulk heterojunction devices were fabricated using the donor materials and PCBM. As a result, the maximum open circuit voltage (Voc), short circuit current (Isc), and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of devices exhibited 0.51 V, 1.88 mA/cm2, and 0.34%, respectively, under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation at 100 mW/Cm2.
