Self-assembled drug delivery systems such as polymeric micelles are attracting increasing attention because of their potential ability as a carrier of poorly water-soluble drugs. Recently, we developed a new class of polymeric micelles which encapsulates dendrimer phthalocyanine (DPcZn) and cisplatin (cis-dichloroammine platinum(II); CDDP) via polymer-metal coordination bonds. Carboxylic acid functionalities of poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(L-aspartic acid) block copolymer and anionic DPcZn was interacted with CDDP molecules by the ligand exchange reaction to form ternary complex micelle. The coordination bond between the platinum(II) atom and carboxylate groups in the periphery of DPcZn and side chain of aspartic acids could allow regeneration of free drugs in the presence of rich chloride ions. This ternary complex polymeric micelle might be possible to use as a carrier of CDDP as well as photosensitizer formulation for effective photodynamic therapy.
