Organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) hold great potential for application in flat-panel displays. Red, green and blue emissions of matching efficiencies are required for full-color displays. Greater successes have been achieved in the development of green and red emitters than blue one in both fluorescent and phosphorescent displays. Here, we summarize our recent research on molecular design, photophysics of blue-phosphorescent cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes and subsequent organic light-emitting diodes using the complex as an emitter. We synthesized heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes based on (2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-methylpyridine (dfpmpy) and (2,4-difluoro-3-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-methylpyridine (dfpmpyCF3) as a main ligand, and some N^O ligands such as picolinic acid N-oxide (pic-N), pipecolinic acid (ppc), anthranilic acid (anth) and pyrazine-2-carboxlic acid (prz) were used as ancillary ligands. Some highly efficient red-phosphorescent iridium complexes are also introduced.
