The development of phosphors has been intensively pursued, not only for their fundamental scientific issues, but also for many electronic device applications. Recently, phosphors for LED have drawn much attention, since white LED is becoming a strong candidate for the next generation illumination and display systems. This talk provides comprehensive introductions of issues on LED phosphors and current research activities. I begin the presentation with the outline of phosphor technology for white LED illumination. Secondly, I discuss the improved emission intensity of yellow silicate phosphors for UV/Blue LED by co-doping rare earth ions in addition to activators. It is suggested that the enhanced efficiency by co-doping might be caused by the defect control, not by the energy transfer from co-doped ions to activators. The latter has been frequently cited as a reason for the enhancement by many former studies. Lastly, the improvement of deep red phosphors for the high color rendering index (CRI) for illuminating LED and the superior color gamut for LCD back-light unit is mentioned. It was found that luminescent property of deep red phosphors depends on the kind of metal fluorides, which plays important roles for phase evolution and kinetics.
