Thiozole-benzo-crown ether-ethylamine-thioctic acid (TBCEA-thioctic acid) has been studied as a NH4+ ionophore in the ion-selective electrode (ISE) based on the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on the gold electrode. Selective ion-recognition properties of TBCEA-thioctic acid were fully characterized in the conventional ISE configuration employing plasticized polymeric membranes. A SAM film based on the TBCEA-thioctic acid on the gold electrode was investigated as a NH4+-selective sensor. Especially, we have focused on the potentiometric response of the SAM-modified electrode for ammonium detection. The ion-sensing behavior of the TBCEA-thioctic acid monolayer on the gold electrode will be compared to that of the conventional ion-selective polymeric membrane doped with TBCEA-thioctic acid. The development of potentiometric SAM on the gold electrode will simplify the fabrication of ISE in a sub-micron scale, which can be potentially employed as a ion-selective scanning electrochemical microscope (SECM) tip.
