NMR spectroscopy for the mass-limited samples and semi-solid synthetic gels

NMR spectroscopy is inherently an insensitive technique compared to other spectroscopic methods in spite of the rich informations it can generate. There have been great efforts by many researchers to overcome low sensitivity problems in NMR spectroscopy since its first inception in 1946, for example, polarization transfer from higher gamma nuclei to low gamma nuclei, isotope labeling, improvements in probe design and invention of new probes such as cryogenic probes, to name a few. Nanoprobe(Model: VARIAN z-PFG gHX), currently being used in Gwangju Center, KBSI, is an MAS(Magic Angle Spinning) probe with which a specially-designed glass sample tube of 40 ul in volume is used and can be spun at around 2.5 KHz. This probe, developed in early 1990's by Varian Inc., is suitable for the NMR analysis of mass-limited samples as well as semi-solid samples such as solid phase synthesis resins commonly used in combinatorial chemistry since high speed mechanical spinning at the magic angle can remove weak dipolar coupling in semi-solids. In this report, we present examples of structural analysis for mass-limited samples in the solution state and swollen semi-solids.
