NMR chromatography: DOSY applied to a mixture of polymer additives

DOSY, an acronym of Diffusion Ordered SpectroscopY, is a series of 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional NMR techniques with which one can analyse a mixture of compounds based on the differing diffusivity of individual component in the solution state. All of the DOSY pulse sequences are derived from the spin echo or stimulated echo techniques under the effect of PFG (Pulsed Field Gradient). DOSY spectrum has an appearance with one axis representing diffusion coefficients of individual components of mixture and other axes showing common frequency spectra, either 1-Dimensional (2D-DOSY) or 2-Dimensional(3D-DOSY) NMR spectra. With a given DOSY pulse sequence NMR signals from constituent molecules with different diffusion coefficients in a mixture get differing degree of phase dispersion and will result in reduced NMR peak intensities under the effect of PFG. Well-resolved projection on the diffusion axis in DOSY spectra can be seen as a chromatogram without any physical separation. In this report we present an application of DOSY to a mixture of polymer additives commonly used in industry.
