Magnetic nanoparticles and QDs have attracted much attention due to their great potential in biomedical applications. These particles could be used in a variety of biomedical and biological applications including magnetic separation and detection of cancer cells, bacteria and viruses. We described the preparation and characterization of fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles made with magnetic nanoparticles and highly luminescent semiconductor CdTe-CdS core-shell quantum dots for biological applications. Surface double-exchange of oleic acid capped monodisperse Fe3 O4nanoparticles with a familiar DMSA was preformed in chloroform in the presence of diethylamine. TGA capped quantum dots was used. The bifunctional nanoparticles possess a magnetic core compose of a dimercaptosuccinnic acid ligand at the surface and a covalently attached fluorescent quantum dots by simple base treatment. These bifunctional nanoparticles have the potential of new applications in bio-medical use.
