Abstract |
The temperature-dependent changes of the interface between uranium dioxide and zirconium in UO2-Zr systems by various annealing were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The U 4f and Zr 3d core-level spectra show that the uranium dioxide exists as hyperstoichiometric UO2+x at room temperature and as UO2 after annealing with zirconium, whereas the zirconium was spontaneously oxidized to ZrO2 at room temperature and various features such as α-Zr(O), (U,Zr)O2, ZrO2, and suboxides after annealing with uranium dioxide. Furthermore, we observed that the molten product was composed of α-Zr(O), (U,Zr)O2 and ZrO2 when a UO2-Zr sample was fully melted. In this work, we represented the definite study for the variations of the interfacial products in UO2-Zr systems as a function of temperature. |
