Subject Study of CO2 adsorption on alkali metal and alkaline earth metal surface treated activated carbon

Abstract Activated carbon was treated with alkali metal by addition of Lewis acid catalyst at room temperature. Surface treated alkali metals are present on the surface of activated carbon in the form of MOH or MO ( M= alkali metal and alkaline earth metal), which is thermodynamically highly reactive with CO2. Because it exists in a stable carbonate form while reacting with an metal oxide or an metal hydroxide. The specific surface area of the surface-treated activated carbon was confirmed by N2-sorption. Chemical binding state of alkali metal were charaterized using SEM-EDS, EPMA and XPS. Surface treated activated carbon with alkali metal as sorbent showed to improve CO2 adsorb performances at room temperature.
