Abstract This presentation reports the facile synthesis and characterization of highly porous hollow Co-Ir nanostructures. The formation of porous Co-Ir nanostructure is through galvanic replacement with hollow cobalt mesospheres as the templates in metal ion precursor solutions. This approach does not require the further removal of templates and greatly simplifies the synthetic procedures. The porous Co-Ir nanostructures can be used as supportless electrocatalysts that exhibit enhanced catalytic activities in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The compositional/structural features are characterized by scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic activity of the Co-Ir for ORR and OER in alkaline media was investigated by rotating disk electrode, rotating-ring disk electrode, and cyclic voltammetry. This research was supported by Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded by the Ministry of Education (2014R1A1A2054826 and 2016R1D1A1B03930895).
