Abstract A new ion pair receptor based on calix[4]pyrrole strapped with a crown ether was prepared. This receptor consists of calix[4]pyrrole having four phenoxy walls in its meso carbons and a crown ether linking two diagonal or neighboring phenol groups. This ion pair receptor was found to be able to bind alkali metal fluoride salts selectively over other anion salts. 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis provided evidence that alkali metals are bound to the crown ether ring with the fluoride anion being hydrogen-bonded to the pyrrolic NHs. 1H NMR titration of the receptor with alkali metal fluoride salts proved that this ion pair receptor binds these salts with high affinity in a 1:1 stoichiometry.
