Abstract Here we demonstrate a novel binder material based on chitosan and rubber for silicon nanoparticle-based lithium ion battery anode. The chitosan and rubber was cross-linked, where various ratios between chitosan and natural rubber were adapted to optimize the mechanical and electrochemical properties. The mechanical and adhesive properties of cross-linked binder were investigated by using universal tensile machine, and its electrochemical properties were characterized by charge-discharge test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the cross-linked chitosan-rubber with optimized composition can tolerate the stress generated by the volume variation of silicon particles, resulting in the outstanding cyclic stability. It might be due to tailored mechanical properties of binder material for silicon anode.
