Abstract Heteroatom doping and well-tuned porosity are considered as significant factors of porous carbon materials for various applications. However, it is still challenging to tune a single variable while retaining the other factors unaffected, which limits rational and systematic research. In this work, in situ nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials were prepared by direct pyrolysis of conjugated microporous polymer precursors with the same skeleton structure. It was found that the CO2 adsorption capability was significantly enhanced compared with their precursors due to the optimized pore configuration. Thus, this work provides a valuable insight into the design and preparation of high performance materials for CO2 capture and energy storage applications.
