Abstract |
Inspired by curry, we developed a substrate-independent coating approach by using turmeric, which is a main component of curry. We performed the experiments to optimize variable conditions with gold substrates in terms of concentration and pH of the coating solutions. The turmeric-coated substrates were characterized by using ellipsometer, contact angle goniometer, and atomic force microscope. The optimized condition was applied to various substrates including titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, glass, nylon, stainless steel, indium tin oxide, polyethylene, acryl, polypropylene, polycarbonate, poly(tetrafluoroethylene), and cyclic olefin copolymer. All of the turmeric-coated substrates showed the similar water contact angle as 35°, demonstrating the substrate-independent coating capability of turmeric. Throughout the experiments, we found that amines are involved in the turmeric coating and the main molecule for the coating is curcumin. |
