Abstract Supramolecular hydrogels are formed by non-covalent bonds, mainly hydrogen bonding, charge-transfer, pi-pi stacking, and coordination interactions, which can be easily found in various natural adhesive systems. The dynamic nature of these interactions offers the interesting possibility of stimuli-responsive and self-healing behavior in the structures and properties. In this work, metal-coordinated hydrogels based on polyaspartamides containing two different imidazole pendants were investigated as novel adhesive and self-healing gels potentially useful in various biomedical and industrial applications. Different metal-ions such as Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Ag(I) were used to prepare metal-coordinated gel in aqueous solution. The water-controlled gel materials showed self-healing behavior and also good adhesive property on various substrates such as glass and plastics, suggesting useful applications as a smart multi-functional soft matter.
