Abstract In this work, the highly porous carbons (PCs) were derived from polythiophene (PTh). PCs were prepared by chemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The lithium adsorption experiments were carried out to analyze the influence of porous texture properties changed by the chemical activation of PCs on adsorption rate. From the experimental results, it was observed that the extent of adsorption process depends on the oxygen and sulfur group increases. Consequently, it could be noted that lithium ion recovery behaviors are greatly influenced by the surface functional groups and textural properties of PCs surfaces, resulting in enhanced electron acceptor-donor interaction at interfaces.
