Abstract |
To remove organic toxicants, such as benzene and chloroform, microbial fuel cells were applied. First, anaerobic bacteria were grown on the anode with acetate substrate until the voltage was maximized, while oxygen was used as a electron consumer in the cathode chamber. Then the anolyte was replaced with organic toxicants. The open circuit potential was initially reached 0.4 V and closed circuit potential with 1000 ohms resistor was 0.12 V. According to the removal efficiency results, over 91% of benzene and 80%of chloroform were successfully removed within 20 hours. |
