Abstract Carbon materials are widely used as catalyst supports due to their unique properties such as excellent electron conductivity, low density, porosity and chemical inertness. However, carbon supports can be oxidized to CO or CO2 during oxygen-involving reactions like the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The corrosion of supporting materials induce a large drop in catalytic activity. Therefore, we have designed noncarbon support iridium-based nanocatalyst. We suggest using a transition metal sulfide as supporting material instead of carbon. Also, synergistic effects between metal and metal sulfide are expected.
