Abstract |
Amphiphilic block copolymers (ABCs) are of great interest because they self-assemble in an aqueous solution to form polymeric micelles and vesicles based on their relative dimensions of hydrophilic- and hydrophobic blocks. In particular, various molecular brushes, which are composed of long polymeric backbones with densely grafted side chains, were developed due to their unique molecular structures and physicochemical properties. We report herein self-assembly of ABCs and their molecular brushes via inter- and intra-molecular interactions. Linear ABCs as macromonomers were synthesized from a norbornene-functionalized chain transfer agent by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, and their molecular brushes composed of poly(norbornene) as backbone and ABCs as side chains were polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Linear ABCs and their molecular brushes formed different nanostructures including vesicles and cylindrical micelles via supramolecular assembly. Conclusively, this work opens a new avenue for building blocks toward complex and functional nanomaterials. |
