Abstract |
The excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reaction of 2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonate, a photoacid dye, has been studied in several different reverse micellar solutions formed from various cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants. Fluorescence emission was observed from the protonated and deprotonated forms of 2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonate, and the degree of ESPT reaction in the reverse micelle was estimated by observing the fluorescence emission intensity ratio of the two bands. The reverse micelles contain a small water environment, with the amount of water usually denoted by the W0 value. The fluorescence intensity ratios were measured as a function of the W0 for each reverse micelle studied, and the effects of adding long-chain alcohols as a co-surfactant or adding salts were also investigated. The observed behaviors were discussed in terms of interactions of the dye in the water pool. |
