Abstract Increasing level of CO2 concentration from the use of fossil fuels has become the most serious environmental concern related to global warming and climate change. The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a key reaction for CO2 conversion to valuable fuels and chemicals. In this work, we report zinc oxide (ZnO)-based composite nanoparticles as a low-cost high-efficiency CO2RR catalyst. They were synthesized by sol-gel method, followed by the annealing process. The composition control of ZnO-based nanoparticles results in more than 80 % Faradaic efficiency of CO2 conversion either to CO or HCOOH with high selectivity. In order to understand the remarkable catalytic efficiency, the electronic structures were thoroughly investigated using synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structures, in combination with various electrochemical analyses.
