Subject Highly stable ionic liquid@MIL-101(Cr) adsorbents for the removal of benzothiophene from liquid fuel

Abstract Recently, there is a considerable demand to reduce the content of sulfur and nitrogen containing organic compounds in fuels like diesel and gasoline to a very low level to prevent air pollution and deactivation of catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) modified with the introduction of acidic ionic liquids (ILs) have been employed to the adsorptive removal of benzothiophene (BT) from n-octane. ILs were synthesized inside a porous MIL-101(Cr) via a ship-in-bottle (SIB) technique. The maximum adsorption capacities (Q0) for the virgin MIL-101(Cr) and for IL@MIL-101(Cr) were 49 and 68 mg/g, respectively, corresponding to a 37% increase in Q0. The Q0 value, based on the surface area (mg/m2) of the adsorbents, increased by 94% for ILs@MIL-101(Cr) (prepared via the SIB route), thus demonstrating the high affinity of ILs for BT. The improved adsorptive performance for BT might be derived from a specific interaction between the acidic ILs and the BT molecules. More importantly, unlike previously reported IL-incorporated MIL-101(Cr)s, IL@MIL-101(Cr) prepared by the SIB approach was very stable for adsorption of BT over several cycles.
