Metal iodates containing IO3 polyhedra in asymmetric coordination environment due to the stereochemically active lone pairs can be used as useful optical materials in a wide transparent spectral range. In this research, we have synthesized a new europium iodate by a hydrothermal reaction using Na2CO3, Eu(NO3)3∙6H2O, HIO3, and water as reagents. The crystal structure of the europium iodate compound was determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group, R3c (No. 146), and consists of EuO8, IO3, and Na+ ions. A complete characterization including the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), infrared, UV-vis diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and second harmonic generation (SHG) will be presented. |
