Abstract

The self-assembled molecular capsules with an isolated nanospace are a very attractive area in supramolecular chemistry. Encapsulation of guest in the molecular capsules can be used for various applications such as sensing, catalysis, molecular storage and selective recognition. The hydrogen bonds have an advantage in the formation of self-assembled capsules because complemetary functional groups such as urea, amide and imine would be directly associated with each other, Although, molecular capsules based on various complemetary functional groups have been studied intensively, to our knowledge, a self-assembled capsule with sulfonamido group is without precedent. The new tetrakis(tollylsulfonamidoimino)-cavitand easily self-assembled with a suitable guest in non-polar solvents to give kinetically and thermodynamically stable molecular capsule, which was stabilized by the eight intermolecular sulfonamide N–H···O=S hydrogen bonds, two from each four paired sulfonamido moieties.
