Abstract We have conducted studies to improve the usability of Pt, which is highly valuable as a catalyst. The addition of platinum complex solution to the aqueous solution where Au-quartz was located results in spontaneous and irreversible adsorption of the PtCl42- complexes. Pt has been used as catalysts in many important chemical reactions for long time and is the most important single catalyst for oxygen reduction and hydrogen oxidation in fuel cells. Electrochemical deposits produced from the reduction of platinum complexes in aqueous solutions of platinum complexes on the model surface of gold electrode has been investigated to study the mechanistic aspect of the reactions. Contrasting behaviors were reported in the literature but the quantitative aspect of adsorption is lacking.
