Subject Comparison of teaching practicum in primary school between South Africa and South Korea

Abstract South Africa is one of the countries that students have the lowest achievement in science and math. Worries and concerns have been paid over the last two decades, but remarkable changes have not been found. They are now struggling to train and equip their primary preservice teachers to teach science effectively. During the visit to one of teacher education institute in Eastern Cape, South Africa as a visiting scholar in 2018, the presenter experienced teaching practicum of primary preservice teachers. Before the practicum, he attended one course for preparing teaching practicum called “school experience” and observed class activities. During the six weeks of practicum, he visited four primary schools with a different school district and learning environment. In this presentation, details of school practicum will be shared in terms of practicum process, school selection, role of host teacher and supervisor, and class evaluation.
