Neuropathic pain can be defined as pain caused by lesion or specific disease of the somatosensory change in the peripheral or central nervous system. Until recently, little was known about the mechanisms underlying the neuropathic pain disorders, making the directed development of novel therapies almost impossible. However, the scientific understanding of cellular and molecular basis of neuropathic pain has resulted in the development of an array of animal models to evaluate the potential of new chemical entities in this therapeutic area. Recently, we have discovered SKL11197 that is a novel non-opioid analgesic compound, currently in clinical development for the treatment of neuropathic pain. This presentation provides a progress report of SKL11197, and summaries the obstacles that have hindered the development of physiology-based approaches as the most promising current strategies.
